The Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV) is an independent research institution for basic biomedical research. As a foundation under civil law and member of the Leibniz Association, the Institute occupies a leading position both nationally and internationally.
The Research Department Virus Immunology, headed by Prof. Marcus Altfeld, investigates antiviral immune responses, with a special focus on innate immune responses. Our group uses a wide range of experimental methods, including multiparameter flow cytometry, single cell gene expression analysis and in vitro culture systems, including 3D human organoid systems, to investigate the mechanisms underlying immune-mediated control of viral infections in humans. We are particularly interested in the mechanisms that mediate sex-specific differences in immunity against viruses (DFG RU 5068), with a focus on antiviral NK cell responses and Type I IFN responses. The project will involve experimental laboratory work, including the use of human organoids systems for viral infections and co-cultures of 3D organoids with immune cells, and studies assessing the impact of steroid hormones and X-chromosomal genes on immune responses in females and males.
We are looking for a highly motivated, ambitious and team-oriented candidate for a
