The Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV) is an independent research institution for basic biomedical research. As a foundation under civil law and member of the Leibniz Association, the Institute occupies a leading position both nationally and internationally.
We are looking for a highly motivated and team-oriented candidate with a strong interest in infectious diseases in the field of virology.
Post-doctoral researcher (d/f/m) Full-time
The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, underscored the threat of (re-)emerging viruses and the need for better pandemic preparedness. Predicting the next pandemic is difficult due to the many potential pathogens, many of which are unidentified and lack approved vaccines or treatments. The WHO has identified several high-priority (re-)emerging viruses. Global strategies for preventing and controlling viral infections primarily focus on vaccination and antiviral drugs. However, timely development and deployment of vaccines during pandemics remain challenging, and certain groups—such as the immunocompromised, very young, elderly, and those with comorbidities—may not respond well to vaccines. Antiviral therapies also face obstacles, including resistance and side effects, with limited options for high-priority viruses. Therefore, it is crucial to develop innovative and alternative antiviral approaches to enhance the resilience of healthcare systems in the EU and worldwide in preparation for future pandemics.

This position encompasses studies of virus-host interactions utilizing various cellular models, including sophisticated primary cell models and organoids, along with advanced cellular biology techniques.
The position is initially limited for 2 years, after which there is the possibility of an extension.
The LIV is certified with the Total Equality distinction, and promotes work-life balance and professional equality between women and men. Women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply. Severely disabled persons will be given preferential consideration if their suitability, qualifications, and professional performance are otherwise equal.
